The indoor controlled-environment facility manages the growing conditions of each and every plant using patented electronic sensor tags on each one, from the moment it is planted in the gene nursery all the way through to harvest and end-product packaging. This allows near-field sensors, first developed by NASA, to monitor and manage the whole environment, to ensure that every plant gets the optimum amount of water, nutrients, light, temperature, and even a replicated soft alpine breeze, 24/7 in continual year-round growing cycles. In addition, the movement and location of each plant throughout its life cycle is recorded on the blockchain.

The cost of the acquisition and investment into this facility has not been disclosed, but it is clearly a multimillion CHF commitment in the future of the Swiss cannabis industry and the European and UK markets’ export drive for the fast-growing and exciting phytocannabinoid industry, which is attracting attention from investors, celebrities, entrepreneurs and consumers alike, across the globe.

CBD and THC: What’s the Difference?

Scientists have identified more than 120 different cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, but the most familiar are THC (delta-9 or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). These two naturally occurring compounds have distinct properties that make them different from one another.

Although CBD and THC have the same chemical formula (21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and two oxygen atoms), they differ in the way these atoms are arranged. This gives CBD and THC individual chemical characteristics that affect the body differently.

How CBD and THC work in the body

Humans, along with all vertebrates, produce endocannabinoids – neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors to help keep internal bodily processes running smoothly. Experts are still determining exactly how the endocannabinoid system works, but research has linked it to processes including pain, mood, appetite, sleep and metabolism.

CBD and THC are examples of exogenous cannabinoids – ones that are not produced by the body but that interact with our cannabinoid receptors, producing certain physiological and psychological effects.

While THC causes a high by binding with cannabinoid receptors, the Swiss Life Sciences Group CBD does not cause a high and is thought to interact differently with these receptors, as well as with other elements in the body, in a way that has a therapeutic impact and produces feelings of wellbeing. This is why CBD is used for medical and wellness purposes. It is usually sourced from hemp, which is the name given to varieties of the Cannabis sativa plant that have a higher concentration of CBD and lower levels of THC.

Minor cannabinoids with health benefits

While CBD and THC are the two major cannabinoids found in the Swiss Life Sciences Group cannabis plants, there are minor cannabinoids that are also used in wellness and medical products, including CBG and CBN.

CBG (cannabigerol) is a small element of the cannabis plant, at 1-2%, compared with 20-25% for CBD. However, this does not mean it is less valuable. Like CBD, it is believed to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

CBN (cannabinol) was the first cannabinoid to be isolated from the cannabis plant, at the end of the 19th century. As THC oxidises, when exposed to high temperatures and light, it turns into CBN. As with CBD and CBG, CBN does not have any intoxicating effects and can be beneficial in treating some conditions and symptoms, including insomnia.

UK Government Vows To Make UK Life Sciences Superpower

The Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock has announced a £37 million investment in genomics projects and data-driven initiatives, which could see patients, including those affected by epilepsy, benefit from better research, treatment, and improved clinical decision-making.

The Swiss Life Sciences Group sector made significant progress in response to the COVID pandemic, and this investment aims to harness this momentum, ensuring the sector’s growth beyond the pandemic and establishing the UK as a “life sciences superpower”. The announcement was made at the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) annual conference and will be delivered through the Genome UK Implementation Plan and UK Functional Genomics Initiative.

Genomics is the study of a person’s entire DNA, and this new support for the UK Functional Genomics Initiative will drive groundbreaking new approaches to improve understanding of how genetic changes can cause disease. Genomics sequencing and medical cannabis will be used as a routine part of everyday diagnosis and treatment, bringing benefits to patients by giving doctors the tools to make better clinical decisions through faster diagnosis and more precise treatments.

Dr Kate Baker, Clinical Geneticist and member of Epilepsy Research UK’s Scientific Advisory Committee said:

“People with epilepsy have an enormous amount to gain from genomics. We know that a high proportion of people with epilepsy have an underlying genetic diagnosis – finding each person’s genetic cause can provide guidance on safe and effective epilepsy treatment, and pinpoint other medical problems and mental health difficulties which are all too common and debilitating amongst people with epilepsy. It’s great to hear about investments in genomic medicine so that more people with epilepsy can access a rapid and accurate diagnosis. However, genetic diagnosis is far from the end of an odyssey for people with epilepsy and their families – we now need to understand how tiny DNA differences can cause dramatic, and dramatically different, symptoms for each person, so that the hope of personalised Swiss Life Sciences Group treatments and better long-term outcomes can become the norm, rather than the exception.”

Swiss Life Sciences Group Plc (SLSG) has identified a need in the fast-growing cannabis and CBD industry to establish a financing and credit facility for companies and brands, especially those in the medical and pharmaceutical sector.

The dynamic group, which specializes in production, cultivation, genetics and manufacturing in the CBD pharmaceutical and nutraceuticals space, has chosen Luxembourg as a domicile of choice for the setup of a securitization vehicle as a highly specialized platform for the CBD industry, to raise funds from the institutional, HNWI and family-office investor space.

The Canxchange Q4 report provides readers with an insight into how the cannabis industry could play a vital role in the development of the Green Economy as the globe moves toward achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Canxchange has released its Q4 2021 Benchmark Report exploring market prices along with an in-depth sector analysis to encourage a more transparent and efficient physical hemp market. In this report, the platform collaborated with Laura Herschlag, co-founder of TEQA Capital, to give readers an insight into the potential of the cannabis industry to contribute to the Green Economy revolution.
There report highlights that providing a macro-economic approach to sustainable growth is a vital principle for the green economy – highlighting that the cannabis industry could be a centrepiece of this revolution, citing the plant’s environmental and economic benefits of hemp – including the plant’s diverse use as a sustainable material and its low carbon impact.

Herschlag, who is also a climate change and circular economy activist, stated in the report: “Hemp is considered a carbon negative crop which means that growing hemp pulls more CO2 out of the air than it releases.

“It also nourishes the soil returning important nutrients that have been stripped away by industrial agriculture. The use of biomaterials, such as hemp, kenaf, and bamboo, are becoming a staple in many industries including automotive, textiles, and construction.”
Despite hemp’s versatile use as an alternative to plastic and materials such as cotton, there are many barriers in the way to the implementation of its use. Herschlag suggests that one of the biggest obstacles is regulatory bodies, and suggests that to overcome this, new standards need to be developed across different industries to enable the material’s incorporation.

Herschlag cites supply chain uncertainty, such as the currently incomplete ecosystem, as contributing to the slow development of the hemp industry and says that philanthropy and government funding could help solve the problem.

“Investors don’t like this kind of uncertainty, and this is where governments and philanthropy steps in. The EU is investing billions in the new green economy. Elon Musk’s foundation established the XPrize, a competition that will award $100 million for carbon negative solutions. US President Biden’s $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill includes $150 billion for climate solutions,” stated Herschlag.

Government and philanthropic fundings will not be the only catalyst as the global economy treads the road to net zero, highlights Herschlag. Investors are taking note and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) is becoming an emerging theme, with hemp and cannabis potential.

“One trend that will be a catalyst for hemp is the transition of big corporations from CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) to ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance). ESG moves the environment and sustainability into the spotlight of corporate responsibility and provides a metric based framework to assess compliance,” adds Herschlag.

“Public companies are publishing their roadmaps to net zero production. Even without specifying the use of hemp in their processes it is clear that as companies increasingly commit to net zero, hemp will have an important role to play.”ly making up a part of this picture.
